Last year we still had Terranova on our minds. After all, we showcased at BitSummit and released a Japanese demo version—and was featured in Denfamico Gamer Japan. There were a lot of things after release we wanted to make—not only new stories, but mini-games and a music player.

We prototyped these in PICO-8 and released them as Terranova Side Stories. As we designed later games, mabbees and I agreed we were planning entirely new game—an arcade of retro 00’s snippets in the form of stories and mini-games.

So we decided to rename it.

Inspired by 90’s 8-in-1 board games, we decided to make eight minigames—four of them narrative, and four of them audio/visual experiences.

The games are tied together with loose themes on relationships—connecting with friends via IM, sending them mixtapes and dress up dolls; in general, how to make tomodachi (friends) in the 90’s and 00’s.

So, Tomodachi 8in1, an arcade cabinet about friendship was born!

And for Terranova fans, there are callbacks. Lots of ‘em.

Retro Rewind #1

This year, we’ve released three of the four narrative games we’ve planned for Tomodachi 8in1.

Today, we’re releasing our first game that features a full soundtrack—Retro Rewind #1.

It’s a fully-functional digital cassette player and mixtape featuring four original songs composed by mabbees. Put it on in the background while you’re working and chill out to some cool pixel tunez.

The full bundle is available for 450 yen (about $3 USD). When our final game is released, we’ll bump the price up to 800 yen ($5.40 USD).
